Hey,
Our Senior Platform Engineer doesn't really like vibe-coding or coding with AI - however, not on all the cases. There was an exception - and he shared me what part of vibe-coding does he vote for?
Recently, during our coffee-talk, I said, I was working on a project (yes, at that time, I haven't thought of a name for it - which later turned to be kPad) that would allow me to control mac using my phone (specialy just from a browser). Then, he asked me, "What's your motivation?"
I said, We were watching a movie this weekend, and I had to go to the mac so often to perform just a minor tasks, like, increasing/decreasing volumes, pausing and replaying and so on. I didn't have a bluetooth mouse, and even I tried downloading a remote mouse on phone and companion software of it on mac -- all look great but it came with a price tag. I was sceptic about paying 7€ for it. and also, having to install a app just to use it rarely was too much for me. So, I thought, can there be a way that I can control mac as a mouse but at the same time I don't have to install anything on my phone?
He said, "Ok, so now it works?"
"Yeah, it works. just as I have imagined or expected it to be. Perfect. I am so excited about it."
"How you did this?" - he was curious.
"You won't like it, but I vibe-coded it. actually, it's 'we' vibe-coded it."
"hmm. how many prompts?"
"probably 3 I think - because now I talk in Nepali with AI assistants, just with my first prompt, I had a working prototype. the subsequent were for some improvements."
He laughed, and said, "Actually, this part of vibe-coding is what I like. Yeah, seriously, AI are really useful for this kind of stuff. if there are some guy who makes unskilled people pay for a little things, AI can help you do it yourself - and I like this part of AI or vibe-coding."
I was impressed, ahh he didn't hate it actually. There are reasons, and boundary, where to utilize and where to keep grinding on.
anyway, then, another colleague asked, "how much would you make people pay for it?"
"nothing. I will let it be Open-source, and free. I did this, because of someone asked me to pay for it. Now, why would I ask other to pay for me again. I don't need it. It will just be there."
It was a quite usual monday morning, but then I answered their curiosity about underlying technical implementation. And, it was good. No, they don't have mac to test it. But, I know for sure, if one day, they will have it (I still doubt, they will have it) - they gonna test it.
Anyway, so, here is, kPad, for you - to control your mac using phone. Just install a app on your mac and then it shows a QR code, scan from your phone and voilaa you are now able to control your mac.
You will be able to do the stuff that I had to come myself on that weekend.
Happy reading, and happy building the stuff that solves little problems.
long live kPad.
